The Wegelnburg is with 571m asl the highest castle ruins in the Palatinate. It is a typical Wasgau Felsenburg with chambers, rock stairs and elaborations on the rock. It was built in the late 12th century as an imperial castle and destroyed 1680 General Montclar. In its history it underwent various owners, including the duchy Palatinate-Zweibrücken. There are still some remains of walls from the 12th and 13th centuries obtained. The ruined castle offers stunning views of the surrounding woods of the Palatine and Alsatian Wasgau and up into the Rhine valley.
